The impact of BTS joining the military on South Korea’s economy
Until 2025, the world won’t be able to witness the biggest boy band in the world, BTS. The members of the group will have to complete their mandatory millitary service in the South Korean Army.

BTS adds about $5 billion to South Korea’s economy every year. Furthermore, if the band stayed popular from 2014 to 2023, it could have generated about $29 billion.
The BTS contributes to tourism as well. BTS brought about 800,000 tourists to visit South Korea.
Men who are able-bodied are mandated to perform military service for 18-21 months under South Korean law.
The country’s parliament actually changed a law in 2020 to give the band a bit of relief from military service because they bring pride to their nation.
Jin(Kim Seok-jin) will be the first member of BTS to serve his military service, followed by the rest one by one.
The band was formed in 2010 and debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment. The band is seen as the face of Kpop to the world.
As of 2022, BTS is the best-selling artist in South Korean history, having sold in excess of 30 million albums via the Circle Chart, and their studio album Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) is the best-selling album of all time in South Korea.
