Vodafone Idea will close if it doesn’t get funding by February – Report

Vodafone Idea may be one of India’s top three telecommunications companies in the absence of numerous newcomers throughout the past decade. However, it has been losing subscribers and has struggled to pay delinquent dues on adjusted gross revenue (AGR) for over 20 years. Vodafone-Idea is reportedly in danger of closing if it does not receive funding by February 2023, despite its efforts to revive itself.

According to the Economic Times, a government official has disclosed that the company’s proprietors must acquire funds by early next year in order to survive. When the government devised a plan to revitalise the sector, Vodafone’s parent company and its partner, the Aditya Birla Group, decided to inject capital into the failing telecom. Airtel and Vodafone Idea were hit with huge AGR bills when the Supreme Court of India decided in favour of the department of telecom and ordered telecoms to pay the fee, which they had fought in court over two decades ago.

Most telecom companies had gone out of business, and Reliance Jio, a new company that was growing quickly, made it hard for the two oldest service providers in India. Both Airtel and Vi chose a four-year grace period, after which they had to pay the total amount in six payments. While Airtel has already paid four instalments, Vodafone-Idea has agreed to give the government a 32% stake through an equity conversion.

But the government recently told the telecom company that it won’t go through with the stake purchase unless it starts rolling out 5G, which competitors Airtel and Jio have already done. During the crisis, Vodafone-Idea has been close to going out of business more than once. At first, after the verdict, Vodafone’s parent company didn’t put more money into the Indian joint venture to save it, which made people worry that it would fail.

When tower firm Indus demanded payment, the telecom provider again faced a service interruption, but it was able to purchase additional time. In 2021, the proprietors promised the government they would fund Rs 10,000 crore to revive the company, and earlier this year, they sought up to Rs 16,000 crore from SBI.
